Contract
Reading your contract for outside work
Many employment contracts say something about work outside your job. It's worth knowing before you start.
Clauses to look for
- Outside work or secondary employment: whether you need permission
- Non-compete: limits on working for competitors
- Client restrictions: limits on working for your employer's clients
- Confidentiality: what you can't use or share
- Intellectual property: who owns work you create
When to ask
If anything is unclear, or your side work is close to your job, ask HR in writing. A short, open question is usually welcomed.
Keep it separate
Use your own equipment and time for side work, never your employer's.
